Winning the Best Farm Shop in England Title
By Cheryl Garthwaite
Nov 17, 2006, 10:17

The awards ceremony, held at the Dorchester Hotel in London this afternoon, hosted the cream of Britain’s fresh meat retailers. The annual event is held in the highest regard throughout the meat retail sector, with the Best Farm Shop section being a new arrival this year.

In response to a cultural change, and a real reflection of consumer awareness of food production, the Farm Shop section identified retailers endeavouring to reduce food miles and linking directly to farm producers.

Blacker Hal Farm Shop Ltd is owned and run by the Garthwaite family. The family has been farming in the Calder Grove area for generations and they have an integral function in running their agricultural and retail businesses. All the meat produced by them on their farm is sold directly to the consumer, expertly butchered on the premises and prepared and displayed in a fashion typical of many exclusive food halls in the South.

No stranger to success, the Garthwaite business holds a string of awards including Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s Best Farm Shop 2004 and 2005.

John Garthwaite, Director, says “It is very encouraging that the industry has recognised those of us who endeavour to produce the highest quality meat and aim to reduce food miles. Any livestock farmer will tell you that good meat comes from healthy and happy animals.”

Last year Blacker Hall supplied, and produced, the rib of beef used to clinch the title of England’s Best Roast Beef Dinner, to commemorate St. George’s Day (run by EBLEX).
